You need:

  • ½ cup almond oil ( any other natural liquid oil will do such as jojoba oil)
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup beeswax

Combine the ingredients in a glass bowl and heat over a pan of simmering water, stirring as they melt.

Once the mixture is completely melted, you can add other ingredients. Because you want to make your own DIY Hand Lotion effective , ingredients that further protect and nourish the skin will help the efficacy of the lotion. So a teaspoon of vitamin E oil, and/ or 2tbsp of Shea butter will improve the lotion.

You can also add a few drops of your favourite essential oil or vanilla essence to create a wonderful aroma.

Once the mixture has cooled slightly, pour into storage jars. Mason jars are ideal for this but any type of jar will do. It is a good idea to sterilise the jars first so just wash them out with hot soapy water and put them in a preheated oven (320 degrees) for about 15 minutes.

When you make your own DIY hand lotion you cannot use this mixture through a pump spray as with a commercial hand lotion but otherwise you can use it just the same as any hand lotion.

Your DIY hand lotion is more oily than water based lotions and is far more moisturising than shop bought hand lotions. This recipe is also better than many other DIY hand lotions because it has a longer and more stable shelf life.

You don’t have to store your DIY hand lotion in the fridge. It has a shelf life of around 6 months and can be stored in the bathroom cabinet. This DIY lotion is great for hands but you can also use it as a moisturiser for the body and even for diaper rash if you wish.
